Jasmine D. Newsome
I began my academic journey at the University of Montevallo, where I played basketball while I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I furthered my education at the University of North Georgia, completing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia, with an expected graduation date in 2026.
Research
My research focuses on the experiences of Black graduate students at predominantly white institutions (PWIs), aiming to shed light on the unique challenges they face and the impact on their psychological well-being. I believe that understanding these experiences is vital for fostering a supportive academic environment. Additionally, my interest in the mental health of athletes drives my dedication to my research that explores comprehensive mental health programs for NCAA athletes. I aim to bridge the gap between athletic performance and mental well-being, ensuring that athletes have access to the support they need to thrive.
I have also contributed to book chapters, including "Racial and Ethnic Identity: Theoretical Advancements and Considerations for Assessment" and "The Importance of Intersectionality: Cultivating Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice in Psychology." These contributions reflect my commitment to advancing the field of psychology and promoting the mental health of diverse populations. Through my academic journey, I continue to grow and refine my understanding of the intersections of race, identity, and mental health, striving to make a meaningful impact in both academic and athletic communities.
