The Psychology Internship Process: What I Knew, What I Wish I Knew & What I Learned Along the Way

The internship application process is a lot. If you’re reading this, you’re probably somewhere in the trenches—navigating essays, interviews, ranking decisions, or maybe just trying to wrap your head around where to even start. I’ve been there. And if I could go back and tell myself anything before beginning this journey, it would be: trust the work you’ve put in and give yourself grace along the way.
One thing that really caught me off guard during this process was the weird aura that surrounds internship season. It’s like everyone suddenly goes silent—no one really talks about how they’re feeling, where they’re applying, or how interviews are going. And I get it—there’s a lot of uncertainty and pressure, so it’s easy to just put your head down and power through. But that silence? It can feel so isolating. The very people who are in the trenches with you—who get it the most—are the ones you might struggle to talk to.
My biggest piece of advice: Find your people and keep them close. Whether it’s a trusted friend, mentor, therapist, or group chat—this is not a process you want to go through alone if you don’t have to. Having people to process with, vent to, or just remind you that you’re not losing your mind makes a huge difference.
Why I Created This Guide
I learned a lot during my application and interview experience, some of which I really wish I had known earlier. This guide is my way of passing that knowledge forward to help others feel a little more prepared and a little less alone.
Inside the guide, I break down:
✅ When to start thinking about internship (spoiler: earlier than you think!)
✅ A year-by-year timeline to help structure your experiences
✅ Essay & cover letter tips to make your application stand out
✅ What to expect financially
✅ Interview insights (including my biggest surprises & lessons learned)
✅ How to navigate rejections (yes, they happen—and yes, they sting)
✅ Ranking stress & decision-making strategies
✅ Match Day emotions & final encouragement
Whether you're applying this year or next, this guide is for you. And I promise—it will help you feel more grounded and prepared as you move through the process.
Final Thoughts
This journey is hard, but it’s also a testament to how far you’ve come. No matter where you match, remember: your worth is not defined by this process. You’ve put in the work. You’re ready. And you will end up exactly where you need to be.
And most importantly... You don’t have to do this alone. Find your people. Lean on them. And remind yourself that this is just one step of the journey—one that you will get through.
Sending you all the good energy as you navigate this wild ride! ❣️
